  1. This book Crank is so realistic. I mean, those thing CAN actually happen to someone in real life. This book has taught me a lot about what goes on behind the curtains of crystal meth. I love every aspect of the story. This book was so moving I couldn't put it down. The drama and real life situations is used to show how drugs are a part of everyday life and are effecting people younger and who people think are "less likely" to become a drug addict. This book should be read by everyone!

  3. I thought the most important thing in the section pg# 1-134 was when kristina trying drugs for the first time.i believe the main importance of this section is when kristina's friend adam gave here drugs and got her addictive, her dad isn't a very good role model because he is the one that introduced her to all these drugs in the environment her dad lives in. in this book the author creates a lot of suspense by what's going to happen to the characters in the book and what they do next. This book makes me want to read on in the story because of how fast the book reads and how interesting it is when i was reading i realized that anyone can get addicted to drugs even the most law abiding citizens and well educated about the effects of drugs on the body like christina who swore she would never get into drugs and all it took was som per presue to get you addicted and i think that is very scary.the thing that i predict that's going to happen in the rest of the book is telling her parents about here addiction and how to get help with here proplens

    1. Even though her dad is not a good role model, he is not introducing or trying to make her do drugs he just does drugs which is not a good influence but also he is away at work which makes it very easy for her to do drugs without him knowing she is doing it, but really it is more Adam that is the bad influence because he is the one that got her hooked on meth, and is known for cheating on girlfriends

I agree that Kristina trying drugs for the first time was a key part in the story line. It was a turning point in the story. I think it is important to educate people about how addictive these drugs can be, and to help people to get help as soon as possible. I also feel that people become like who they are surrounded by. That’s why Kristina got dragged into meth; the people around her were doing it.

Crank is an interesting book. Katrina is living with her dad, he smokes cigarettes, weed, and snorts meth. He is a bad influence, he offered his daughter a cigarette on their car ride home from the airport. That was a part of their first interaction. It was a huge red flag. He is also lazy. He talks about skipping work to do drugs. On top of that, he is disrespectful. The man thought about convincing his boss to do meth, so he could have sex with her. He gets nostalgic when he thinks about his ex-wife. He doesn’t believe anyone will measure up to his daughters mother. He was absent and distant in Katrina’s life. He didn’t see her for 8 years. Katrina’s dad was a stranger to her. I don’t think Katrina will recover. Meth is extremely addictive and terrible for your body. More people get killed by meth than not. Her mom may be contributing to her addiction because her mom is beautiful and Katrina thinks she is perfect. It sets very high expectations for Katrina, because her mom is her role model. It puts her in a terrible situation. She trusted someone with her child, and she came home a totally different person.

    1. I think also katrina's mom is part of the problem because katrina feels that she is left out of the family and she doesn't get enough attention which would have led her to go to her dads. because she remembers him being such a awesome person as it said in the text, to her she said daddy but then he turned into dad

      Delete
    2. I agree that kristina's dad is a bad role model. I don't even know why her mom let here go there in the first place or the cort. I think that the court should have done a check on where he lived and what his habits were and what his past was like.

I was the connector for the book Crank. This book is a very realistic book it talks about the monster in drugs and how someone can be convinced to do them the fact. That this could happen to anyone makes this book very relatable we see things like this on the news. Everyday of people on drugs like this and how they are affected by them much like how the book does. The housing in this book is the most realistic description I have read in a book the way it describes the food in the fridge and the outside. Settings this is a very exciting book for how it goes in to detail it pulls you in like a whirl pool.

    1. I also think the environment they described is very realistic . this is a place with drugs would be because of all of the things in health i learned about and about all the peoples stories they told us. what the places looked like when they described them in the book is exactly like the drug houses guest speakers talk about in health class.

      Delete
    2. i agree with this that the housing situation or the whole area of which this story is set in place makes it all realistic because it everyone around that area is doing drugs such as there doing drug in a bowling alley, it doesn't matter where you go in that town it's like one big gigantic drug house

I also think meth is a monster. I don’t think people are aware of how real this issue is and that it really can happen to anyone. I didn’t make the connection between the food in the fridge and how serious that is. I’m glad you mentioned that. It shows how bad of a father he actually is. It’s also sad that he takes her to McDonalds all the time, that’s unhealthy.

While I was reading Crank one of the quote’s stood out to me, “just before you drop knowing you can’t turn back. You know how you feel at that instant ? Well, that’s how it feels when you shake hands with the monster.”(Hopkins 89). Well this quote is interesting because it shows how a powerful drug such as meth can take control your life once you take it, you can’t go back and turn around so “shaking hands with the monster” is really giving the monster your life and you don’t get anything back in return except misery.
Another quote I found interesting is “but lust is stronger than love, and monster lust is unconquerable.”(Hopkins 105). This quote is interesting because it does not matter how much love you have for someone who is addicted, usually this person will fall under temptation to have more crank/meth than to be clean, and normally people with lots of support still relapse that is why this quote is so interesting because “the monster” will take your life, and run, and no one can save you then. Both these quotes are worth repeating because this just shows how powerful Meth is and once you take you cant go back to the love ,support, and family, and if you do the lust is going to conquer and you will most likely go back to drugs because addiction is instant after using the drug and hard to beat after.

    1. I really agree with your post i think drugs are very powerful and anyone can fall under there spell of addiction. That's why i think it's important to educate kids about the effects of drugs how they affect you. I am also think it is very important to teach children ways to deal with peer pressure.

I agree. I think these are really good quotes that explain how Kristina is feeling, and show the reality of addiction. I also like how with your second quote you talked about the loved ones of addicts and how hard it is for addicts to get clean, no matter how hard they try. Addiction is real, and it’s so sad. Your response was very insightful.

  8. I was character watcher this week and the character I chose was kristina. In the book crank she adds a lot to this book. I think she adds a lot of shock to the book,a lot of stress, and a lot of suspense to the book. The way she adds shock to the book is the way she has changed throughout the book. For example she was a good kid that was the image of the perfect kid. Then she adds suspense by doing all of these illegal bad and inappropriate things. The way that she adds stress to the book is she keeps meating all these new people who some of them are not the best people which adds stress because something might happen to her one of these days. I think one of these days kristina will get in to bad trouble with here parents or get in trouble with the law. This is one of the reasons i like this book because of how real this is and how it could happen to anyone. Just like how drugs were introduced in the story. I think what kristina is doing could hurt here down the road in life like here school grades.

I agree with you. She is in a really bad spot, and the story follows her story and journey through addiction. You could add that she is the main character, because saying that would help to show how influential her actions and feelings are on the book. You also might want to use spell check to catch errors with things like punctuation and spelling.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you she keeps making things worse for her because all she does is sneak off or go find someone who is not a good influence and hanging around those people and she might lose her friends because she does not hang out with her friends who actually are a good influence.

Crank taught me more about how hard it is to fight an addiction, and how your surroundings influence the decisions you make. I think the way the book is written, in poems, helps to portray more of how Katrina is feeling. It makes you read in between the lines. I think Katrina’s mom played a role in her daughters struggle because she set an unrealistic standard for what beauty was. It also mentioned that her mom was distant. That can be hard for kids to deal with, because relationships with parents can be the most influential and meaningful. When Kristina goes days without cigarettes and meth, it is because she doesn’t have access to it. She is still craving it, but she can’t get her hands on any. Kristina also is missing her boyfriend. She thinks that being with Adam would make everything better. It was a big turning point when he called her and said they should see other people. She thought she loved this boy, and she wanted him to love her too. This gave her yet another reason to want to use meth. She wanted to numb the pain of missing him and being hurt by their break up. Their break up made me sad, because they seemed to be really into each other. But, they were toxic for each other. He encouraged her to do unhealthy and unsafe things, and she allowed him to. That is not love. Relationships should bring out the best in you, not the worst. I think she will fall for the new boy she has met at home, because she has a void she needs to fill. She wants to feel good, and if she thinks he will make her feel good, she will get with him. I think this is an important part of the story, because it shows how desperate she is to feel good and that she doesn’t care where that good feeling comes from.

    1. I do agree that kristina's mom was distant i mean she hardly payed attention to her and kristina did not like it but i also think that just think mostly she just wanted attention so that is why she went around talking to boys and it helped her not think about meth, so there were different reasons why she used meth and the order would be her family, her ex, then that she wanted attention.

      Delete
    2. I also think that the reason she is dating all of these new boys and using all of these drugs is to fill a gap in here life were here parents love and attention would. Here Mom is very strict because she grounds here for the slightest things and doesn't appreciate for what she is by saying why cant you be more like your sister

This section reminds me of the movie Split , as Kristina or Bree are alternate personalities but for one being, but the guy in Split or Kevin Wendell Crumb who is played by James McAvoy has split personalities, but even though there is multiple personalities they are all in one human body. This is significant because this shows that everyone may have multiple personalities even though it may not be shown, there may be 3 or 6 personalities in the back of someone mind but also how someone struggles to keep them in, or too stay the way they are, or how like Kristina didn’t like Bree until she got used to that personality.
This Section also looks alot addiction would in real life, you see Kristina going around trying to find a way to get that next high and or being miserable when she can not have drugs, but you also see she is doing things she would not normally do, such as sleep a long time, she didn’t want to do things she normally would like to such as hang out with her best friend or go to her step father's company picnic, but you just see that she is struggling and she wants to hang with the monster so she is doing some bad things like hanging with a boy and doing drugs with him while no one sees her doing this.

    1. I do think it will impact kristina’s life with these drugs it could have here be homeless one day or even dead. That's why I think it’s important to tell someone before she gets to far lost with the monster. I hope in the future she can get some help with here multiple personalities or if the drugs make here have these multiple personalities than that's another reason to get off drugs.

I think these are really good connections! I agree that how Kristina is feeling and viewing herself is similar to the main character in the movie Split. I also think that is a good way to describe this book to someone else, because Kristina’s alter ego, Bree, is a big part of the story and the plot.

  12. The book crank is a very good and interesting it's about a girl who goes arizona to visit her dad. While there she meets this boy who lives in the same apartment she starts to really like this boy and he likes her. He then leaves his than girlfriend to date her. They go an a few dates and they went to a bowling alley where she tried crank. Than her dad comes by and she has no shirt on so she leaves and starts walking home. On the way home she gets cornered by a group of men who where trying to do things to her the fact that you see stuff like this on the news makes this book real and good to read.

In the book Crank, we see the main character Kristina has a alternate personality. Kristina is a introvert, not really wanting to be bold just wanting to stick in with the crowd and not really be popular but wants to be overlooked. She really is the definition of “normal”. Her other trait is that she is conflicted. She does know that what she is doing is wrong, she doesn’t want to make these mistakes and she just wants to stay her old self.but she can not because she has this alternate personality also taking control sometimes when she wants that personality or Bree to take control or not. But the other personality or Bree is very extravert, because she wants to stand out in the crowd, and she will do whatever she wants, because she really does not care. But at the same time this alternate personality conflicts Kristina, because with Bree she probably would have never done drugs, and probably would have never met the first two guys that she “fell in love with”. So how kristina controls these two personalities is very strange to me. This makes me think that this alternate personality will come in, and stay there forever, and the Kristina part will never recover is what this book is making it look like.

I see a few issues with punctuation, capitalization, and run on sentences; this could be fixed with a simple spell check. I really like the prediction you made at the end. I did not think about that. It’s what happens to a lot of people when they succumb to addiction. It’s so sad.

    2. I believe also that kristina’s other personality of “Bree” is taking over kristina and its going to be hard for kristina to recover to here old self. When and if kristina does get off of drugs I have a feeling that other personality of “Bree” will still be there making here crave drugs.

There were two passages that stuck out to me in my reading this week. One was “And it occurred to me for one uneasy moment that every move I had made lately might have started a landslide. What if I couldn’t go back? What if I died in the crash?” (Hopkins 300). I think this quote shows that Kristina realizes that she’s making very bad decisions. She is fully aware, but she doesn’t know how to stop. She is trapped in the chains of addiction. Reading this made me sad because she is in such a dark place. She has no idea how to get out, nor does she have the care to because she loves being high so much. Another passage was “Besides, I did want to go. I just wanted to go high.” (Hopkins 392). This quote made me think about how torn she is between her two personalities, Kristina and Bree. She is holding on to her old self, Kristina, and doesn’t want to lose sight of what is important in life. At the same time, she wants to be Bree because she is constantly chasing the high of meth and wants to feel that all the time. She also is having trouble keeping her priorities straight. She prioritizes her family and Kristina, but meth and Bree always creep up on her. She cannot decide what matters more, so she is just trying to get by. She is lost. She jumped through hoops to make sure she could get high, and this quote is one of many examples of that.

    1. I agree that kristina is losing grip of her old self, and i think that the Bree part of the personality will take complete control and possibly get her killed. The decisions that she is making are super poor, and she does not want to turn to her family for help, because they would criticize her for it so she turned to drugs for help.

      Delete
    2. I do believe that she does want help with her addiction. The reason that she is still doing drugs is because she has know knowledge of how this is destroying her body and how the drugs are going to impact here life in the future. In the future I bet that she is going to regret her decision to do drugs.

  15. This week I was cenector. Some connections I have is when kristina went over to roybens house to get drugs it reminded me the time we went to health class when our class went on a field trip. On the field trip we got to hear recovering drug addicts stories. They talked about how they made friends off drugs. When I was there it made me feel really sad for them. They said they watched some of there friend die from drugs. The presentation would make you never want do do drugs. Another connection I found is when kristina’s family went to the air show it reminded me of when my family went down to an airforce base were you could watch the Blue Angels perform an air show. There were no drugs involved in our family fun ! every time we went down there we went as a family and my whole family enjoyed it. Every time we go down to gulf shores we go down to florida for the air show. It's a really neat show there's also a gift shop there were you can buy airforce stuff at. The only thing that was not good about it was that my brother kept winning the whole time because he was hot .

There are some issues with spelling and capitalization. I like how you made connections to other people’s situations, and yourself. The connection to watching the Blue Angels air show shows that you really know what is going on. I think that is pretty cool, and I’m glad there was no drugs involved when your family went!

      Delete
    2. These connections are very close to the book. From what i have heard that people who make friends from drugs are not really friends, they are just people who have the same goal to get high. Which is also very sad because people who get addicted do not have any real support.

I think Kristina shows her struggle with “the monster” more than ever when she is pregnant. Some reasons are during those seven months she struggled saying no to the monster, she really wanted to do it, but she said no, although she did do it twice while pregnant. Also she struggled her addiction with tobacco. I also think that her pregnancy kinda split the family, like she said she listened to her mom and her step father argue about her and her pregnancy. I also think that Kristina’s pregnancy divided her and chase, I mean he wanted to marry kristina and have her move out to Los Angeles to live with him where he would support them. What do you think would have been smarter to do, Stay home with her family or move out to Los Angeles? Personally I think it is smarter to stay home with her family, just based off the fact that she has more support for her and the baby. I think what is going to happen she will move out to Los Angeles, when her baby is old enough, and go live with Chase, and probably marry him.

    1. I do not think kristina will marry chase I think that her baby is going to be adopted by her family because I predict in kristina's future that she will ether have to go to rehab or she will be arrested for drug use. Which would ruin her life. I think the only way for her to be able to support this baby is get a job and do some sort of college and the big one is to get off drugs.

I agree with you. While Kristina was pregnant, she struggled even more with her addiction and getting/staying clean. I think it shows that even if you have a reason to get sober, addiction doesn’t care. Addiction picks even the best people. I think staying home is the smarter decision as well, because her mom has already had babies, so she knows how to take care of them. That may help Kristina out a lot.

  18. This week I was passage finder. In the story Kristina is pregnant and she says this “My story, needful, forever, relationship with the monster.” (Hopkins 535) This shows even though she knows doing drugs while pregnant is harmful to unborn baby she still can't stop. This shows even though she has a child she doesn't care about it all she cares about is how she can get high next which I think is really sad. In the story Kristina is talking about here addiction and she says this “Crank is more than a drug it’s a way of life.” (Hopkins 537) This shows how powerful addiction is for anyone struggling from it. This quote shows that when people become addicted that little part of addiction stays with you forever even after you have been clean for a long time. That's why I think so many people realaps. These quotes make you realize how evil drugs are and how it can turn the best people into bad people which is really sad. All of this drug use in society today is going to hurt us one way or another. This book makes you realize that we should do something about this epidemic in our society and help people free themselves from the shackles of addiction and help them take back their lives.

    1. I disagree with the statement that you say she doesn't care about her unborn child, because she does her addiction is just overwhelming and she needed to do it but she knew what it would do to her child, and she didn't want to do it alot so it would not affect her child permanently

The quotes you chose show the most important part of the book. They reflect what the author wants you to take away from the book. Good job with picking those out! I also really like what you said at the end. I agree that we need to do something about the epidemic.

This book is very realistic, so it is easy to connect to. I think almost everyone has a story to tell about addiction. I know someone who was addicted to heroin. Much like Kristina, she got hooked when she was a teenager. She also had a baby, younger than society deems as acceptable. She knew she loved her baby, but it was hard. She needed her mom’s help. She has been clean for a year now, but she still is scarred by addiction. Another connection I can make is to a movie I watched called Heroin(e). There was someone in the movie who was an addict, and a prostitute. It talked about how they wanted and needed to be high so bad, they would do anything just to get that. Kristina mentioned feeling that way. Kristina said she let Brendan rape her because she wanted meth. She lost all of her common sense and problem solving skills because she was high. I also know that many addicts have babies born addicted to whatever the mom was, and it is terrible. We talked about this in Child Development class. The babies shake, cry, and scream because they are going through withdrawal just like an adult would. They didn’t even choose to do drugs, and they have to deal with the repercussions. Even if the baby isn’t addicted, they have a predisposition to being addicted later in life.

    1. This is so true, i mean addiction makes even the most law abiding good hearted people to low places, so even though Kristina was a good kid took her so low and she did a lot of things she would not normally do for drugs such as deal drugs or get raped for drugs.

      Delete

    2. It is really sad that somany people who have babies are addicted as well as their babies. I think there should be some sort of law that says people who do drugs while they are pregnant should pay some sort of fine or should have to put there baby up for adoption or in extreme situations they would have to go to jail. The reason for this is because its not fair to the child.
